A cleaning process to standardize data and obtain business insights
The challenge
IBV is a private equity firm that partners with businesses to help them scale and unlock their next phase of growth. They focus on a “buy and build” growth strategy.
For one of its current portfolios, which comprises more than 30 companies, they needed to consolidate data across the group, developing a centralized operational database and a data warehouse.
- Industry: Private Equity
- Solution type: Data engineering / Data warehouse
- Tech stack: PostgreSQL, Databricks, AWS
What we did
First, our team processed the historical data from each company, standardizing structures and cleaning the information according to business rules.
Once completed, we expanded the data with the current information, extracted via an API call to their management system.
For this process, we used Databricks, executing the cleaning through Notebooks. And, from Databricks, we moved the data to an operational database, where the company can access the data.
Our next step was building the data warehouse to make the data model much more efficient for Business Intelligence and analysis.
What we achieved
A project like this one is the best example of what we do: pure data engineering.
Ensuring data quality and consistency always requires a rigorous process of identifying patterns, cleaning, unifying, and structuring, so the resulting information remains coherent and reliable. And that’s what our team does best: cleanliness, precision, and meticulous execution.
Thanks to the great communication with the client, we built a single source of truth in a short period of time that now allows the firm to know exactly where to go to find key information.
With the correct structure we have designed and implemented, our team is now able to add new companies in a short period of time (less than two weeks for a company outside their system, and one week for three companies within their current system). And, for them, now it’s much faster to get a reliable, global view of how the business is performing.
"Data reliability is the foundation of sound business decisions. zenital's support has been indispensable in managing the compex, unstructured data systems often encountered during small company acquisitions"

How to change an entire data strategy
I imagine 8wires as that sincere and honest partner that takes you out of all that noise and helps you focus on what is important, no matter how unsexy it may be, to achieve a great long-term goal.
The one who accompanies you through the hard times and helps you through the tough decisions, knowing that there is no easy road. The one who gives you the push or the tools so that you climb and be yourself the one who reaches the summits you propose in a healthy, sustainable and energetic way. And above all, the one who steps aside when he knows that he is not helping you or that he will not be able to give you what you need.
I don't know if it is helpful, but somehow I saw on the web a visual explanation of the problem in the data/technology world (I don't know if with this metaphor) before showing how it is to work with us and finally, another visual explanation of the result.

Like a bridge over troubled waters
