The challenge
We have been working with Volotea, a Spanish airline, since 2018, being our longest-standing client. And, as part of our ongoing commitment to quality and trust, our team identified a key area for improvement: several Azure Blob Storages service were generating higher costs than necessary.
What we did
We immediately took action to implement a series of optimizations aimed at reducing expenses:
- Applied Lifecycle Management rules to clean and move files across storage tiers, lowering costs
- Deprecated obsolete pipelines
- Cleaned files and folders that had already been migrated
- Executed VACUUM operations on Delta tables to delete outdated files, liberating space and keeping the system running smoothly
- Stopped specific pipeline that was causing a cost spike, as it had already been replaced by new tables
In addition, we worked with Volotea’s Databricks environment, which included specific internal storage to support the Databricks File System that was managed in Azure.
For this particular case, we performed a thorough cleaning of test and deprecated tables and files, and set up a programmed job to execute a monthly VACUUM, keeping file volume stable and the storage optimized.
What we achieved
These actions will have a significant impact for the client: a combined reduction of costs from 230 euros/day to 50 euros/day, approximately. If this remains stable, it could mean savings of up to 5,4K/month and around 65K/year.
Beyond the financial impact, we have also established some maintenance actions, with Lifecycle Management rules and VACUUM programmed jobs, to ensure long-term cost efficiency.
This case is a clear example of how our team works: we don't just deliver projects but proactively seek opportunities to help our clients and improve their data structure and management, saving costs and optimizing their systems.
"Having the zenital team by our side means knowing we have the best data management options at our disposal. Thanks to their proactivity, we've optimized our system configuration, which could lead to future savings of up to 5K per month".

How to change an entire data strategy
I imagine 8wires as that sincere and honest partner that takes you out of all that noise and helps you focus on what is important, no matter how unsexy it may be, to achieve a great long-term goal.
The one who accompanies you through the hard times and helps you through the tough decisions, knowing that there is no easy road. The one who gives you the push or the tools so that you climb and be yourself the one who reaches the summits you propose in a healthy, sustainable and energetic way. And above all, the one who steps aside when he knows that he is not helping you or that he will not be able to give you what you need.
I don't know if it is helpful, but somehow I saw on the web a visual explanation of the problem in the data/technology world (I don't know if with this metaphor) before showing how it is to work with us and finally, another visual explanation of the result.

Like a bridge over troubled waters
